More and more, firms are finding the marketplace an increasingly difficult environment. Often, this is due to them concentrating on producing a bigger bottom line. They're looking in the wrong place.
They employ managers who have fine technical skills and knowledge, but, all too often, lack the necessary interpersonal skills. In fact, I have never met a manager who can tell me what they actually get paid for. What do you think it is?
The top answer to this question is: Results.
My challenge to you: Go and manage a result!
Can't be done. This is 'the bigger bottom line' syndrome. You'll find that working harder is nowhere near as effective as working smarter.
Managers must first (and continually) develop themselves, and then help to develop their staff. Mentoring is one of the most effective tools for this sort of intervention, enabling managers to come up with more creative solutions to workplace problems.
Also, by improving interpersonal relationships, Mentoring is an essential tool in effective, long-term, Stress Management.
